Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository

The federal government and the Department of Energy (DOE) plans to build the nation's first high-level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain. Yucca Mountain is located 80 miles northwest of Las Vegas, a major metropolitan area that is home to about one and a half million people and one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. The plan involves moving over 77,000 metric tons of hazardous nuclear waste across the country, using rails and roads that pass through other major metropolitan areas and small towns across this country. Citizen Alert believes that all Americans should be concerned about this plan, not just Nevadans.
Despite the July 2002 Senate vote allowing DOE to proceed with a license application, this proposed dump is not a "done deal." Citizen Alert remains vigilant in fighting onward through the coming court cases.
